The Importance of Riparian Vegetation to Stream Ecosystems

نویسنده

چکیده

Ab$tract.--Riparian vegetation is very important in determining the structure and function of stream ecosystems. Most aquatic organisms, both invertebrates and fish, are directly or indirectly dependent on inputs of terrestrial detri tus to the stream for their food. Natural changes in riparian vegetation and the biotic processing of detritus, as well as other factors, determine the kinds and abundance of aquatic invertebrates living in streams, from headwaters to large rivers. Removal of riparian vegetation will sig nificantly affect stream organisms by: 1) decreasing detri tal (food) inputs; 2) increasing the potential for primary production in aquatic plants; 3) increasing summer water temperatures; 4) changing water quality and quantity; and 5) decreasing terrestrial habitat for adult insects.

Impact of riparian land use on stream insects of Kudremukh National Park, Karnataka state, India

The impact of riparian land use on the stream insect communities was studied at Kudremukh National Park located within Western Ghats, a tropical biodiversity hotspot in India. The diversity and community composition of stream insects varied across streams with different riparian land use types. The rarefied family and generic richness was highest in streams with natural semi evergreen forests a...

Influences of Riparian Vegetation on Aquatic Ecosystems with Particular Reference to Salmonid Fishes

--The riparian zone has important influences on the total stream ecosystem including the habitat of salmonids. Shade and organic detritus from the riparian zone control the food base of the stream and large .Toody debris influences channel morphology. Temporal and spatial changes in the riparian zone, the indirect influences of riparian vegetation on salmonids, and the effects of man's activiti...

Groundwater discharge creates hotspots of riparian plant species richness in a boreal forest stream network.

Riparian vegetation research has traditionally focused on channel-related processes because riparian areas are situated on the edge of aquatic ecosystems and are therefore greatly affected by the flow regime of streams and rivers. However, due to their low topographic position in the landscape, riparian areas receive significant inputs of water and nutrients from uplands. These inputs may be im...

Denitrification and Bacterial Numbers in Riparian Soils of a Wyoming Mountain Watershed

The presence and activity of denitrifying bacteria as well as bacteria capable of reducing sulfate in 1 upland and 5 riparian soils of a mountain watershed in Wyoming were studied. Bacteria were enumerated from soil samples collected during summer along transects placed perpendicular to stream flow. Samples were taken at 3 depths within each plant community. Subsamples were frozen and later uti...

Riparian wildlife and habitats

~ Riparian lands are among the most productive ecosystems on earth. They occupy only a small proportion of the landscape but frequently support a greater variety and abundance of animal life than adjacent habitats. ~ Important habitat components include vegetation (often taller, denser, more diverse, and more complex in riparian lands), food, standing water, shelter from predators, sites for ne...
